What FMP is
Fused magnesium phosphate, also called fused calcium magnesium phosphate or FMP, is a phosphate fertilizer made by melting phosphate rock with magnesium- and silicon-bearing additives at high temperature and then quenching it in water. The quench locks the product in a glassy, non-crystalline form. That form does not dissolve in water, but it does dissolve in the weak acids that plant roots release, so the phosphorus becomes available in the soil where the roots are. In Vietnam the product is known as phân lân nung chảy.
Why buyers choose FMP
- Releases slowly in the soil. FMP does not dissolve in water, so it is not quickly washed out of the root zone.
- Brings calcium and magnesium as well as phosphorus. The national standard sets minimums for all three (table below).
- Suits acidic soils. FMP is an alkaline fertilizer, and Vietnamese agronomy guidance uses it to reduce soil acidity on acid and acid-sulphate soils.

What is fused magnesium phosphate (FMP)?
Fused magnesium phosphate (FMP), also called fused calcium magnesium phosphate, is a phosphate fertilizer made by melting phosphate rock with magnesium- and silicon-bearing additives and quenching it in water. This produces a glassy material that supplies phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. In Vietnam it is called phân lân nung chảy.
Is FMP water soluble?
No. FMP does not dissolve in water. It dissolves in the weak organic acids released by plant roots, which makes its phosphorus available in the soil and reduces leaching losses compared with water-soluble phosphates.
Is FMP suitable for acidic soil?
Yes. FMP is alkaline, and Vietnamese agronomy guidance uses it on acidic and acid-sulphate soils to reduce acidity while supplying phosphorus, calcium and magnesium.
What specification does Vietnamese FMP follow?
Vietnamese FMP is made to the national standard TCVN 1078:2023. The standard requires at least 15.0 % available P₂O₅, at least 26.0 % CaO and at least 14.0 % MgO, and caps cadmium at 12.0 mg/kg.
What forms of FMP can be supplied?
TCVN 1078:2023 covers powder, granular and pellet FMP. You state the form you need in your RFQ, and the contract fixes it.
